OBAKU watches. They will stay with you for more than one season…

Imagine that you are going to the countryside to a little wooden house on the lake from where it is a half-day walk to the nearest shop. You get there and all of your favorite Magpie gadgets (that is laptop, iPad, smartphone) end up in a large safe cabinet you have no access to. Out of the blue you are alone with yourself and you are fated to the rhythm of the day determined by the rooster crow…

Can you feel it, Magpie? I am having withdrawal symptoms – my hands are shaking, I feel anxious and fiddle with my fingers. But I also know it will fade away quickly. Then I will switch to a slower mode. Maybe I’ll run barefoot on the grass and talk to myself. Because I’m not perfect either – every day I stumble upon things and people, make more or less conscious decisions always entailing some consequences. And just like you I sometimes need to find new energy and think what to do next.

According to the Zen philosophy, keeping clear, attentive mind in harmony with oneself ensures feeling of balance in life and brings luck – the true one, not searched for outside, but inside oneself. Ok, enough of these ponderings. You are probably wondering, Magpie, why I am telling you this.

When I first saw Danish Obaku brand watches I needed to have at least one in my collection. I liked their design – not forced and minimalist. And there is their low price. Then, while exploring the history of the brand and reading about its values I found out that the designers, that is Christian Mikkelsen & Lau Liengård Ruge, base their projects on the philosophy of the ancient Asia, the above-mentioned Zen. And the logo?

Obaku Logo is inspired by calligraphic Ensō sign which means circle. I will tell you that in Japan one can easily know the artist’s character by how they draw Ensō. Apparently only a person on a high level of spiritual development is able to draw it properly.

I started wondering if it isn’t another PR babble or an interesting story. But later, when the courier with my parcel came, I quickly opened the package and put the ordered watch on my wrist – the ponderings went away…

I started to turn it in my hand. I always do it when I want to take a closer look of a new “trinket”. I like that it is written on the inside who designed the watch. Its cuvette (that is its casing) is gold plated. On the crown (the knob to set the time) there is a small Obaku logo. The mechanism is quartz (battery-powered) and the glass is mineral, which makes it impact resistant.

This is of course a description of my Obaku which you can get HERE. I’m curious which one you’ll like, Magpie. There are many nice products in the offer. In our photos you will see the ones selected by a trained Magpie eye. Thus the choice won’t be easy. These are not, of course, the top shelf watches. But if you value good design at a sensible price you’ll be satisfied with Obaku. It will stay with you for more than one season!
