Value measured with carats. Red carpet jewelry.
Hi Magpie! Today I’m taking you to the land of luxury. We’ll be in a jewelry paradise, that is the red carpet! As your private reporter I’ll tell you what diamonds the stars wore.
We’re past the time of glint and flashes. It started with Golden Globe awards, then, like an avalanche, came a mass of events which gathered the Hollywood finest company. Grammy’s, BAFTA (British Academy Awards), Golden Raspberries, Oscars, or the famous Vanity Fair after-party are some of the most important film and music events we could follow.
You probably know, Magpie, that most of the beautiful creations we saw on the red carpet were borrowed. The stars and celebrities work with fashion houses, stylists and make-up artists to look like a million dollars five minutes before they enter the room. Now I’ve got to the point of this article, because we are going to talk about the millions today.
Holy Trinity, that is the star, jewelry and bodyguard
You won’t be surprised when I tell you that jewelry is also borrowed. What’s more this is the way to tell which celebrity is a real star. The biggest jewelry brands dress their favorite celebrities in small materpieces and right behind them walk bodyguards keeping an eye on the jewelry worth a fortune.
Such deal with a celebrity is not only a great PR for the brand, but also a many-years-tradition in Hollywood. You certainly remember the iconic images of Elizabeth Taylor or Audrey Hepburn, who walked the red carpet dressed from head to toe in diamonds.
There are a lot of luxury jewelry brands that are somehow renowned for red carpet, but really the Holy Trinity counts, that is Harry Winston, Lorraine Schwartz and Chopard, because it is their jewelry we usually encounter.
Beyonce’s 400 carats
Let’s start with a look at Grammy’s Awards where Beyonce was celebrating her triumph. It wasn’t only the result of her latest album and the number of received awards, but also the jewelry which was stunning. The pop star has been “dressed ” for 16 years by Lorraine Schwartz, a New York-based designer who makes jewelry only on order. She designed Beyonce’s famous engagement ring (nota bene worth $ 5 million!) and takes care of her jewelry on the gala and in the music videos.
At the Grammy’s a gorgeous compliment to the red Roberto Cavalli dress was a 400 carat necklace worth $ 12 million. If the value of a star is calculated through the jewelry they are wearing, you can guess who takes first place on the podium!
Nicole Kidman’s 119 carats
On the red carpet of the Oscars ceremony Nicole Kidman stood out particularly because of one reason. Do you remember the popular meme, where she claps in a very unusual way? Here is a small reminder:
This comical scene got many interpretations, but its true reason was very down to earth – Kidman was wearing a Harry Winston ring and she didn’t want to destroy it by all means. But as she claims, lack of applause from her when giving the most important prize this evening would be at least a nuisance.
The actress had reasons to worry. The brand dressed her in earrings from Cluster Diamond collection with 30.60-carat diamonds set in platinum and 18-carat gold, two bracelets including a vintage one with 44.03-carat diamonds and the other one with 31.59-carat diamonds and a famous ring that caused the whole mess with 13.58-carat diamond. The actress was wearing almost 119 carats jewelry in total. Such accessories added a unique charm to equally beautiful creation from Armani Prive.
Charlize Theron’s 51 carats
When I look at photos of Charlize Theron from the Oscars ceremony red carpet I understand why diamonds have been one of the most desired luxury goods for so many years. Maybe 51 carats is not a phenomenon in comparison to the jewelry I showed you before, but the earrings the actress wore made her literally glow in the Christian Dior metallic dress.
The jewelry was from Chopard’s Queen of Kalahari collection, that is one of the most luxurious collection of the jewelry giant. To create this collection the brand bought in Botswana 342-carat diamond which then was transformed into a collection of unique and priceless masterpieces. I am writing priceless, because the price of the earrings the actres wore (25 and 16 carats) was not revealed to the public.
Lily Collins 8 carats
The size and carats don’t mean that much anyway. On the Golden Globe Awards we saw young Lily Collins who stunned us with Zuhair Murad creation and small Harry Winston vintage earrings with 8.94 carat diamonds. After all it’s not jewelry that makes you glow. It’s you!
