Learn how to pair from the Magpies… a guide to the most beautiful rings for life.
What do a magpie, a raven, a penguin and a swan have in common? These are of course birds – ones of the thousands that inhabit ecosystems across the globe. But they have something in common. You will find the answer in the text. Today I will tell you, Magpie, about combining pairs and the most important element of Magpie’s engagement – choosing the perfect ring.
Magpie’s relationship = monogamy.
And change trinkets like gloves.
In spring they sing coquettish trills to later build a nest together. Do you know that magpies build a nest with characteristic roof made from loosely interwoven twigs? Ha! The Magpies are pretty darn good architects because their “flat” even has two inlets. It is furnished with grass, roots, leaves, fur and feathers, although in urban Magpies’ nests even pieces of aluminium can be found.
Birds probably have it easier, because even though they are not hearing about faithfulness since childhood (unless the birds have their own air school where wise owl teaches them values), the species that I mentioned in the introduction, instinctively form monogamous pairs for years. When they “live” together, the female takes care for the nestlings and the male gets them food. And after the death of a partner they don’t hurry to find a new one…
Most of us is looking for a life partner. Regardless of whether we hope to grow old with him or are not planning this far ahead at the moment – life is better together than alone. But if you already live together and come to the conclusion that you would like to be together for a long time, it is time to formalise the relationship. No, I’m not talking about the wedding, rather “calling dibs” on the partner with the ring that the woman will not want to take off of her finger for years …
Engagement, engagement…
Some sources say that the first engagement ring was given by Archduke Maximilian I to his chosen one, Mary of Burgundy, in 1477. These were the times in which marriages were concluded to combine family fortunes. Bachelors “took” ladies often only for their dowry, for profit or career. Around the marriageable girls, particularly those that were seen as “the perfect party” professional matchmakers always appeared. Some accompanied their pupils practically since childhood. Only since the mid-nineteenth century the role of matchmakers was no longer needed, and bachelors began to propose on their own.
Luckily, today lovers form pairs a little differently and we can forget about the topic of the dowry (i.e. assets brought by the wife to the marriage) and bride price (i.e. a kind of insurance in case of abandonment by a partner or his death). Research conducted in the 90s shows that almost 40% of the intending spouses prefer the traditional form of engagement, that is in the presence of parents and wedding planning well in advance.
What’s more, over 22% of the surveyed couples decide to get married only a month after the engagement. An engagement between just the two (without parents and friends) is chosen by slightly more than 30% of couples who decided to legalize their relationship after a long time of being together.
A perfect ring?
From the anthropological point of view, the engagement ring is intended to prove that the man will be able to provide for the woman, it also has to deter potential suitors – a woman shows it and a man withdraws (because he thinks e.g..: No, I couldn’t afford such a ring). It is also a social signal – like a wedding ring. Therefore, we need to establish on which finger we wear it (I’ll tell you that it is always on the right hand ring finger) – this is a signal for viewers not to approach. Well, but this vision is far from romantic…
Therefore, let’s go back to the one that is closer to your heart. I have something special for you, Magpie.
