Tina Lilienthal. Brings fun and joy into the world of jewelry.
“Since the beginning of humanity, we’ve been looking at the night sky, making up stories, myths and religions based on the celestial bodies and their movements (…)”
Hi there. I’m sitting with Katarzyna in a hostel in Gdańsk right now. We’re planning our next journeys on our laptops, as giving you inspiration and discovering new jewelry treasures is what we love the most. Before sitting down to write the post, I had been wondering how to accurately portray the cosmic jewelry by Tina. This colorful pop art collection playfully tells a story about love, loss, things that are down-to-earth and valuable. Though you can’t see it at first glance, because the colors and plastic lightness distracts from the hidden messages. 😉 Tina Lilienthal was born in Bonn, Germany. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, she stayed in London. This is where she designs jewelry. Although we didn’t have the opportunity to talk to her directly, we did meet with her assistant, Emma Madden, who’s also a jewelry designer. If you’re not following our site on the regular basis, you can read about her in one of our previous posts. 😉 Emma told us about the works of Tina and borrowed us jewelry for the photo shoot. We did manage to talk to Tina by exchanging a few mails. Lilienthal’s designs have won numerous awards. As a trendsetter, she appeared on the ranking of The Professional Jeweller Hot 100 and was named the designer of the year by UK Jewellery Awards. Her collections show a dichotomy between pop culture and human nature in a bold comic style. She’s been inspired by the folk tales of the Brothers Grimm since childhood. She would notice two inspiring natures – a light one and a dark one. Her work combines symbolism with pop culture. The astral collection, i.e. the large bracelets with small planets, which you can find on the photos, was inspired by the Cosmos, which she always found very intriguing with its mysteries, evoking a curiosity to discover our galaxy. Her collections premiere twice a year in Paris. You can also see them on fashion shows in London. What’s interesting, Tina’s jewelry is very popular among celebrities, e.g., Kelly Osbourne, Pixie Geldof, Davina McCall and Tali Lennox. One time Keira Knightley came to her boutique to personally pick up a singled out necklace with a bunny and a skull. 😉 Kate Nash, on the other hand, would were her favorite necklaces during her performances and even wore them for the British Vogue. Tina is an incredibly creative designer, who enjoys enormous respect, not only among young jewelry designers.
We did photo shoot a few blocks down from our friends’ house, where we were staying. They were not in London though, so we were given the keys by their neighbor – a Pole, Mr. Roman – who, with a fatherly instinct, would look after us, making sure everyday that the Magpies were back home safe and sound. 😉 During the photo shoot, he sat on a nearby ledge, making sure that nobody accosted us. A lovely human being. Best regards! xxx
