Pola Zag. “I don’t want to offer my ideas created by someone else, that’s half of the satisfaction.”
I treat jewelry as another layer of skin. You may think that I’ve gone crazy or exaggerate. But I really don’t like displaying it like a Christmas tree – with dangling gewgaws, mindlessly hung on a body. The secret lies in matching it in a way that makes it become a part of us. This comes with time. Now, think about how you take it off before going to sleep. I do it with care. That’s why I often feel that the favorite necklace steals the sent of my perfume…
It started with a bracelet that Pola created for herself five years ago. She enchanted her close ones with it. She’s an architect by trade. She’s always been fascinated with items and creation. That’s why she focused her entire energy into jewelry designing. She writes down every single idea – all of them naturally flow from her head to her hand, from which they end up in the sketchpad. Pola loves the city and people. She goes out for a coffee, even by herself, pretty much every day, just to be in a crowd. She likes to read and observe. As for the inspiration, she finds it in beautiful, mature women and modern architecture, which can be noticed in her jewelry and her consciously set target – women who love themselves and care about esthetics. Currently, she’s pregnant and discovering a new type of consciousness, which cannot be learned without going through the experience. The studio is a both a place to focus and a type of a laboratory for her. That’s where she finishes the process of creation and experiences what’s possible. If she comes across any problem, she racks her brain until she succeeds. Since recently, her father (Daddy Zag) has been helping her in the creation process. I have to admit that my favorite moment when meeting a designer is entering their workshop. That’s the best place to listen to different stories, browsing through design notes or looking at drafts on the walls. That’s the place, although slightly dusty, can be a more intimate zone for an artist than the bedroom… Zag studio has fascinated me. Probably because it looks a bit like a treasure chamber mixed with a blacksmith’s workshop. It’s full of tools for metalworking on metals and other raw materials, such as brass or stainless steel. As you may have noticed, Zag often combines them. Currently, she’s at the stage of expanding her studio. She invests in new, more advanced tools and pieces of equipment, which will increase her designing possibilities. She’s planning to create a collection using noble metals, but that still requires more work, “I don’t want to offer my ideas created by someone else, that’s half of the satisfaction.”
It’s quite possible that we will be able to see the results during the premiere of the fall-winter collection. I can’t wait.
