FABULOUS ENGAGEMENT | TOMASZ DONOCIK
Engagement rings always carry a sense of a fairy tale. They can reveal a lot about the bride and groom-to-be, their emotions and personalities. Despite the passage of time and their having been locked away in a jewelry box, engagement rings are still able to evoke unique emotions. Every ring holds a bit of a secret about the relationship and a particular story about the how’s: how the two people met; how the emotion swept them away; how their engagement happened. It is the engagement ring that encapsulates the memories of the first ‘I love you’ or the first dates. All the magic, sprinkled with a bit of fairy-tale charm, reflects perfectly in engagement rings by Tomasz Donocik.
Polish roots, Austrian childhood, and an atelier in London. Tomasz Donocik is certainly on top of things when it comes to taking advantage of his cultural wealth in order to delight via his projects. He is a goldsmith who doesn’t just love art, but also nurtures a great appreciation of literature and cinema. It’s evident in the way he skillfully juggles motifs and the associations drawn from them in his fabulous designs. Color, bold forms and attention to detail run the show. The luscious colors of rocks and intricate shapes let you easily discover references to the Art Deco style, retro-futurism and the geometric abstractions of the 80s. Donocik, however, is not just about bold designs. He also presents craftsmanship of the highest level. The proof is in the pudding, or rather in the numerous awards that he has been receiving around the world; including the Gold Award in the Precious Jewelry category at the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Competition in London. About himself, Donocik says that he creates for those who cherish being different. He lives by that principle when designing his extraordinary engagement rings.
Engagement on a grand scale / Promoting color
Donocik’s latest idea for a fairytale engagement has been inspired by the classic tale, Beauty and the Beast, as well as the Garden of Paradise. The ring, reminiscent of a fairy-tale enchanted rose, immediately steals your attention. Centered around an imposing rubellite surrounded by green tsavorite and black diamonds, the ring has been crafted in eighteen carat pink gold. The rose ring also exists in other variants, including one with brown diamonds. But don’t think that this is it along the lines of floral associations. The Water Lily Pad ring from the Garden of Good and Evil collection seems like a Garden of Paradise creation by virtue of the purple amethyst and a setting imitating delicate green leaves.
Long live the finesse!
As you can see, Donocik gives evidence that the engagement ring does not necessarily have to equal the clichéd romantic comedy notion of the-bigger-the-better white diamond rule. With Donocik, apart from the large scale, it is also the character that matters. His designs are supposed to tell stories of remarkable relationships. Unsurprisingly, the goldsmith particularly enjoys working on custom order rings. Every such design is unique, completely one-of-a-kind, yet not devoid of the flair characteristic of the artist. This doesn’t just go for his engagement rings. Browsing through the jewelry created in his studio, you will find marvels such as the ring with two Phoenixes entwined in an embrace, or the one with green beryl and openwork dragonfly wings. They are timeless stories encapsulated in a perfect form.
