A G Color Inc. Q&A: Tanzanite, Transformation, and the Art of Color

Rare, modern, and emotionally charged — tanzanite has secured its place among the most desirable gemstones in contemporary high jewelry. Discovered only in the 20th century and sourced exclusively from a single region at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, its story is one of finite beauty and unmistakable identity. In this Q&A, A G Color Inc. shares its expertise and philosophy behind working with tanzanite and other exceptional colored gemstones. From extraordinary cutting projects to a design language rooted in timeless elegance, this conversation reveals how rarity, craftsmanship, and intention define modern luxury.

Your “spécialité de la maison” is tanzanite. How did this extraordinary gemstone earn its place in the world of high jewelry?

Tanzanite earned its place in high jewelry through a rare combination of origin, beauty, and modern relevance. Discovered only in the 20th century and found exclusively at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, its finite supply immediately positioned it as a gemstone of desire and rarity that can’t be recreated. At A G Color Inc., we recognized early on that Tanzanite represents the future of fine colored stones—rare, expressive, and unmistakably modern. Its vibrant blue-violet hues, paired with expert cutting, allowed us to rival traditional blue gemstones while offering something entirely unique to collectors and high jewelry houses.

Tanzanite’s deep blue feels almost otherworldly. What symbolism and cultural significance does this rare stone embody?

Tanzanite has always felt like a stone of transformation to us. Its color shifts between blue and violet depending on the light, and that sense of movement and depth is what makes it so special. It was propelled by incredible marketing from Tiffany and Co and is now often associated with clarity, intuition, and new beginnings, which is why so many people choose it to mark meaningful moments in their lives. At A G Color Inc., we see Tanzanite as something deeply personal—each stone carries a quiet emotion and a story that continues once it’s placed into a piece of jewelry.

What is the most exceptional or significant tanzanite ever handled by AG Color?

Some of the most meaningful Tanzanites we’ve manufactured were created through highly customized cutting projects. One involved crafting a coordinated layout of cushion-cut Tanzanites totaling close to 300 carats, cut precisely to a client’s specifications where uniformity, the deep blue color, and our craftsmanship had to be flawless. Another standout was a 175-carat Tanzanite cut into a custom octagonal shape, designed to preserve both the stone’s scale and its exceptional depth of color. That said, at A G Color Inc. we truly believe that every stone we cut is significant — each one is approached with the same level of care, respect, and attention, because even the smallest piece deserves to be exceptional.

Beyond tanzanite, which gemstones define AG Color’s curated portfolio?

While Tanzanite is at the heart of our company, our portfolio reflects our broader passion for fine colored stones. We’ve historically focused on stones that complement our Tanzanites causing us to house incredible one-of-a-kind Tsavorites and Emeralds, and also craft beautiful jewelry using Aquamarine and Morganite. However, in recent years we’ve ventured into manufacturing fine untreated Rubellites, with its beautiful red-purple hues, that not only add variety to our inventory but also allow jewelers to create blue-green-red combinations that are unlike any other. These stones have been key to A G Color Inc.’s identity over the years with every gemstone that we offer being something we would proudly stand behind — not because it’s trendy, but because it has lasting beauty and value.

You are experts in gemstone cutting. Which cuts are currently defining modern luxury and desirability?

There’s a growing appreciation today for cuts that feel intentional and expressive rather than overly traditional. Alongside classic emerald cuts, refined cushions, and elegant ovals, we’re seeing a strong return to cabochon cuts — especially sugarloafs and smooth ovals — because they showcase the richness of color and give the stone a very sculptural and regal presence. We’re also seeing in uptick in skinny tapered baguettes, kite, and shield shapes, as well as other fancy, non-traditional cuts, which designers love for their bold geometry and individuality. At A G Color Inc., our cutting philosophy is about understanding the personality of each piece of rough and choosing a shape that allows its color, character, and versatility to truly stand out.

AG Color goes beyond loose stones into fine jewelry. What defines your design language?

Our design philosophy is very simple: the gemstone should always be the focus. While we favor clean lines, balanced proportions, and thoughtful details that enhance the stone rather than overpower it we also like to house pieces that feel more abstract and allow for the client to wear a piece that embodies their personality. A G Color Inc. jewelry is meant to feel timeless — pieces that can be worn today and still feel relevant years from now. Everything we create is rooted in respect for craftsmanship and for the natural beauty of the gemstone itself.
