6 jewelry places in Amsterdam every Magpie should visit, part 2.

Have I already told you that Amsterdam is beautiful, especially at night when the tiny pubs at the canals are filled with young smiling people? Katarzyna liked her hot-dogs with herring and frankandels (herbal hot sausages) with mustard. Our tour map was not standard, of course we visited the most important museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House … – You also have to visit them!)  But… it is the jewelry side of Amsterdam I wanted to show you.

So let’s move on…

4. Galeria RA

Apart from diamond excitement, in Amsterdam we are looking for inspirations and trends in contemporary jewelry. And viola! We find two galleries. I have to admit that Google Maps works perfectly on wi-fi in a coffee shop (should you be in Amsterdam, you’ll find good Internet connection there) and shows us where we should go.

We meet there Paul Derrez, designer, lecturer and gallery owner. He opened Galerie RA in 1976 and since then in his collection there is jewelry from 60 artists and designers from all over the world. Réka FeketeTherese HilbertSophie Hanagarth. In the center of the gallery there is a temporary exhibition which Paul changes every two months.

address: Galerie Ra, Nes 120, Amsterdam

opening hours: Wednesday-Saturday, 12:00-6:00p.m.

5. Galerie ROB KOUDINS:

This is a gallery that specializes in contemporary artistic jewelery – conveying ideas that have sculptural qualities. In the area of 100 m2 there are works of such artists as: Sungho Cho, David Bielander and Hans Hovy who cross the border between applied and fine art. In addition to jewelry you will find many books and catalogs there. The collection is so impressive that we stay in the gallery longer than for a moment.

address: GALERIE ROB KOUDIJS, Elandsgracht 12, Amsterdam

opening hours: Wednesday-Saturday, 12:00-5:00p.m.

6. Brilmuseum (Muzeum okularów).

Walking down the streets in the city center we get to the museum of glasses. It’s tiny. It was founded 35 years ago by Jan Theunissen, father of the current owner. You can feel that it was created out of family passion of collecting frames (they have been collecting them since the nineteenth century!). You know well that both Magpies wear glasses and love beautiful accessories so… of course we go inside.

The exhibition is spread over 2 floors in small rooms. We squeeze through narrow and steep stairs, which is not an obstacle at all. We are looking at old eye examination instruments and other interesting props from the former ophthalmology salon. In the cases there are classic frames, and these are totally bonkers. It’s an amazing feeling when you realize that you have 700 years of history, fashion and spectacle in front of you.

You know the famous frames from Buddy Holly (those are the inspiration for hipsters), those round like John Lennon’s probably too… but do you know who inspired Ray Ban? Be sure to check out Elvis Costello’s gllasses. At Brilmuseum you will see them with your own eyes.  It’s really worth going there!

address: Brilmuseum, Gasthuismolensteeg 7, Amsterdam

opening hours:

Wednesday-Friday 11:30-5:00p.m.

Saturday 11:30-5p.m.
